Just when you think things are getting easier - life throws you a curve. As I said in our last blog - we were headed to Cape Town - which we did. We had a great few days there in Cape Town with the missionaries and Pres. and Sister Woods - went to see the penguins on the beach again and had some great meals in charming little restaurants.
On Friday we left to go to Port Elizabeth about a 10 hour drive. We had a reservation at a nice little hotel on the beach and we had 3 days all to ourselves! About 2 1/2 hours into the drive Taylor got a phone call and an Elder serving in another country here in Africa had tried to commit suicide. It was a horrible call to get - a very sad situation- but long story short we turned the car around and drove back to Cape Town and got a flight back to Johannesburg.
Taylor had to accompany the Elder back home to Utah. It was a very sad and unfortunate situation. Not only for the young Elder but Taylor was not excited at all to make that flight again - he was not feeling great - and especially so soon after just being there. It was a long flight - over sold - so every seat was taken - everyone was packed in tightly and they were in coach! He couldn't even take anything to sleep on the plane since he was escorting the Elder. They had a fairly uneventful trip to SLC - Taylor rented a car at the airport and drove straight to the cabin in Sundance to crash. He slept and slept and slept and slept.
The second night he was there he woke up to fire engines, Travis, Mikelle and the electrician (that had been working on the house). He had been acting very strange earlier - very weak - tired and even talking nonsense (i know you are probably thinking that is normal but it was worse than usual) When he din't show up for Easton's baseball game early that day - Summer got a little worried and called Mikelle to go check on him. She brought him some food and said he was doing a little better but he just wanted to sleep. Later that night when no one had heard from him Summer got nervous - thinking maybe it was carbon monoxide poisoning - so she called 911 and sent Travis and Mikelle back up.
When he woke up to everyone standing around the bed he was feeling a little better (and embarrassed) but was again very weak and extremely tired. He kept thinking he had jet lag.
Luckily - Summer to the rescue again. The next morning she dropped the kids off at school and went straight to check on him - again - she knew something wasn't right. This time she packed him up - wouldn't take "no' for and answer - and drove him down the hill to the ER - something just wasn't right. As you probably know his back has been really hurting him and he had an appt. later that day to get an injection in his back. He convinced her to stop there first - got the shot and then convinced her he was feeling better and just needed to sleep a little longer.
To make a longer story short - after going to the doctor the next day - they found out he has sistic (spelling?) otherwise known as "blood poisoning!" We think it was from a spider bite he got in while we were in Cape Town. The bite had got infected and he was really a mess! Being his stubborn self he refused to go to the hospital So they drained the infection - what they could - packed it and gave him 2 antibiotic injections. The doctor is coming to the house tomorrow and if he is not improving he will go straight to the hospital. Needless to say he is not coming back here for at least another week.
Please keep him your prayers - he needs it now and may need it even more when I see him! I have started packing twice - he can be so stubborn! The girls have all been wonderful to him and are taking good care of him. I will update his condition as soon as we know anything more.
Jean and Taylor, ahhhhh!!! This is so awful and so scary!! I'm glad Summer took him in. Please let me know if I can help in any way...!!!! My prayers are with him and you!! xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteOh, Jean (& Taylor)!! How scary for both of you! Especially you, since you are so far away!! Yes, the girls are taking good care of him, etc., but it doesn't make it better or you! I hope there is better news to report by now. Until then, just know that our prayers are going out for both of you...BIG TIME!!! So very fortunate he was back home when it all happened, and could receive good care from doctors there...once he got to them! (Men make the WORST of patients!!) Let me know how things are going as I am very concerned. Spider bites can really take their silent, deadly toll!
ReplyDeleteLove you and wish I were closer to offer help in some way . . Nancy Etter
